Kane Ends 25-Year English Drought With Ballon d’Or Triumph
LONDON — Harry Kane was named the world’s top men’s player Monday, ending a 25-year wait for an English Ballon d’Or winner after a record-setting season for Bayern Munich and England. Kane, 33, scored 73 goals for club and country last campaign. He helped Bayern win the Bundesliga and German Cup, including a hat trick in the cup final against Stuttgart, and reach the Champions League semifinals. At the World Cup, Kane scored six times to pass Gary Lineker as England’s leading scorer in the tournament. England finished third after losing to Argentina in the semifinals and beating France, its best World Cup finish in 60 years. Kane said his route to the award had not been straightforward, urging young players to keep working through setbacks. “Anything is possible with hard work, when no one else is watching,” he said, pointing to resilience, determination and self-belief. The London ceremony marked the first time the Ballon d’Or was presented in the city since the award began 70 years ago. Fans packed streets around the London Palladium and chanted Kane’s name as he left after midnight. He said he would keep celebrations modest, with a cup match scheduled for Wednesday and team training in Munich. Kylian Mbappé finished second in the voting, followed by Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Lionel Messi. Yamal was named the best young player for the third consecutive year. Kane thanked teammates, coaches and family, and said representing England was the honor he loved most. England coach Thomas Tuchel called the national team “lucky to have you as our leader.” Putellas also made history, winning her third women’s Ballon d’Or after helping Barcelona to multiple trophies, including the Women’s Champions League, and Spain to the Women’s Nations League title. The 32-year-old midfielder, who joined London City Lionesses in the offseason, had previously won in 2021 and 2022. She ended the three-year run of Spain teammate Aitana Bonmati, who was not shortlisted after breaking her leg in December.
