Ukraine says Starlink now supports drone speeds above 400 km/h
Ukraine’s defense minister says Starlink and military-grade Starshield service have returned to stable, high-speed operation. The restored connection matters to drone missions, frontline communications and military logistics after reported speed restrictions disrupted operations.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry says Starlink and Starshield satellite communications are again operating at high speeds, a change that could help restore drone capabilities along the front line against Russia.
Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara said Saturday, Oct. 24, that ministry monitoring systems showed stable connections and speeds exceeding 400 kilometers per hour. He said the improvement was important for troops, drone operations, logistics and communications, and that the ministry would continue tracking performance.
Ukrainian officials had reported restrictions on the services since the previous week. Drones were still losing their connection at speeds above 160 kilometers per hour as of Friday, despite President Donald Trump saying a day earlier that SpaceX chief Elon Musk had restored access.
The reported limits had affected Ukraine’s ability to use drones and carry out defensive strikes. The issue also surfaced in a Friday phone call between Trump and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, amid broader tensions between Washington and Kyiv over the war.
Starlink is SpaceX’s satellite internet service; Starshield is its military-grade communications offering. Reliable connectivity is vital to Ukraine’s forces for operating drones and maintaining battlefield communications. Khmara’s announcement indicates that speeds have improved, though the defense ministry said it would keep monitoring the service.
