Trump Sets 15-Month Shutdown for East Potomac Course as Lawsuit Heads Back to Court
WASHINGTON — East Potomac Golf Links is slated to close for about 15 months beginning Nov. 15 as President Donald Trump pursues a major renovation of the public course, two miles south of the White House. Trump announced the schedule Sunday on Truth Social, describing the existing course as outdated and in poor condition. He said the redesign would meet a high competitive standard and could host major tournaments. His post did not address the legal challenge already before a federal court. The project has drawn objections from a D.C. preservation group and two individuals, who sued the Interior Department and National Park Service in February. They argue that converting the facility into a championship-style course could drive up tee-time costs at a golf destination intended to be open to everyone. The administration has countered that the plaintiffs have not shown concrete harm, arguing that their recreational or aesthetic preferences do not establish a legally protected interest. U.S. District Judge Ana C. Reyes has ordered the government to stop cutting trees at the site. On Friday, the government’s lawyers filed a motion seeking Reyes’ removal, alleging bias and calling her conduct in the case “egregious.” A hearing was scheduled for Monday, Oct. 19. The dispute puts a public recreation area and its future access at the center of Trump’s broader effort to reshape Washington landmarks. For golfers and other visitors, the immediate question is whether the renovation timetable will hold while the court battle continues.
