Senate Staff Could Soon Get Access to Anthropic’s Claude AI
The Senate is expected to add Claude to the artificial-intelligence tools available to congressional staff, joining ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Officials have not said when access will begin.
WASHINGTON — Senate staff are expected to gain access to Claude, Anthropic’s artificial-intelligence chatbot, adding another commercial AI tool to the technology available for official work, according to two people familiar with the plans.
The timing of the rollout is unclear. Individual Senate offices decide how to use the tools available to them, while chamber officials have issued internal guidance on AI use for official business.
Senate Sergeant at Arms Jennifer Hemingway told lawmakers in April that staff already had access to Microsoft Copilot, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. She also said her office was leading a working group to examine the legislative branch’s AI uses and needs.
The House has also issued internal guidance for staff using AI in official duties. The House Chief Administrative Office and the Senate Sergeant at Arms provide technology support to their respective chambers.
Adding Claude would expand the range of AI assistants congressional employees can use, but the available information does not specify what tasks staff may use it for or what safeguards will govern its deployment.
