Russian Barrage Kills Three in Kyiv, Knocks Power Out for 600,000
Russian missiles and drones struck residential and energy sites in Kyiv Tuesday night, killing at least three people and injuring 22, Ukrainian officials said. The attack left about 600,000 people without electricity overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The dead included an 8-year-old child, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. A residential building was damaged and caught fire as the assault continued, according to images from the scene. Zelenskyy said Russia launched 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 drones and loitering munitions at energy and other critical infrastructure in Kyiv, the surrounding region and Kharkiv. He said 26 energy facilities and four oil and gas sites were damaged. “This was a targeted Russian ballistic strike specifically against the energy sector,” Zelenskyy said, arguing that the infrastructure had been covered by the energy ceasefire announced by Trump. The Ukrainian leader called the attacks deliberate. Ukraine also reported a sudden Starlink speed restriction that disrupted military missions. The report adds a communications vulnerability to the damage to power infrastructure, though no further details about the cause or scope of the disruption were provided. The barrage puts fresh pressure on Ukraine’s energy system and civilians as the country faces ongoing Russian attacks. The casualty and damage figures were reported by Ukrainian officials.
