Poll: Half of GOP voters favor candidates who prioritize victory over Trump loyalty
A new national poll finds Democrats more energized to vote against President Donald Trump than Republicans are to back him. Half of Republican voters say their local candidates should focus on winning, even if that means publicly disagreeing with the president.
With less than two weeks until the midterm elections, a new poll suggests Republican voters may be more focused on winning than on demonstrating loyalty to President Donald Trump.
Democratic voters are more motivated to vote against Trump than Republican voters are to vote in support of him, according to results released Oct. 23 by POLITICO and PF Global. Half of Republican respondents said they would prefer their local candidate to aim for victory even if that means speaking out against the president.
Trump has urged voters to “pretend” he is on the ballot, putting his political standing at the center of the campaign. But the findings suggest that emphasis may not serve every Republican candidate: GOP voters appear willing to put electoral success ahead of automatic agreement with the president.
The poll’s results come as Republicans confront the familiar midterm challenge of holding seats while out of power in the political cycle. Voter frustration over high prices is also expected to weigh heavily, adding pressure on candidates to address kitchen-table concerns rather than make the election solely a referendum on Trump.
The survey is part of an ongoing polling project conducted by POLITICO and PF Global, an independent polling company headquartered in London. The reported findings point to a potentially consequential distinction for the party: Republicans may remain motivated to prevent Democratic gains without insisting that candidates echo Trump on every issue.
