Maduro and Wife Deny U.S. Conspiracy-to-Torture Charges in Manhattan Court
Former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, pleaded not guilty Thursday to a federal charge accusing them of conspiring to torture detainees in Venezuela. The arraignment took place in Manhattan federal court, and the trial was delayed by two weeks. Maduro and Flores appeared in tan prison uniforms with their ankles shackled. Maduro tried several times to proclaim his innocence, but U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein repeatedly interrupted him. The plea is a formal denial of the charge, not a finding on the allegations. The case will proceed in federal court in New York.
