Huckabee warns Gaza peace effort could outlast its staffing plan

U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee cautioned that the team coordinating Gaza’s disarmament and reconstruction may not have enough people or resources to carry out its mission. A planned Pentagon drawdown puts pressure on civilian agencies to take over, but their capacity remains unclear.

Huckabee warns Gaza peace effort could outlast its staffing plan
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has warned that staffing and resource gaps could undermine President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, according to a cable he signed and sent to State Department leaders on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026. The cable raises questions about whether the International Gaza Support Center can keep operating as the Pentagon reduces its personnel over the coming year. The center is intended to coordinate work among the United States, Israel and international partners, including efforts to disarm and rebuild the Palestinian enclave. The current plan calls for civilians to assume duties handled by Pentagon personnel. But Huckabee wrote that the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem is not presently staffed to take on those responsibilities and would need details about the required personnel, funding and logistical support. “The BoP is working to increase staff but its ability to cover all functions at the IGSC remains unclear,” Huckabee wrote, referring to the Board of Peace. His warning puts a practical question at the heart of the administration’s plan: whether the organizations expected to oversee Gaza’s next phase will have the capacity to do the job once military staffing is reduced.
