Hastie condemns One Nation cartoon targeting veteran senator Lambie
Liberal MP Andrew Hastie has accused One Nation of importing “MAGA-style politics” after its cartoon mocked independent Sen. Jacqui Lambie’s prolapse. The RSL has also condemned the cartoon, which landed amid a dispute over proposed limits on veterans’ health-care payments.
CANBERRA — Liberal MP Andrew Hastie has condemned One Nation’s decision to make Sen. Jacqui Lambie’s medical condition the subject of a political cartoon, calling on Australian women to take note of the party’s character.
The cartoon appeared in One Nation’s “Please Explain” series and depicts Lambie referring to a prolapse that she has publicly linked to an injury sustained while serving in the Australian Army. The Returned and Services League has also criticised the segment.
Hastie, a former SAS soldier who served in Afghanistan, described One Nation’s approach as “MAGA-style politics” in a statement. He has himself been a recurring target of the party’s attacks, with the cartoon series portraying him as a traitor.
Lambie has spoken publicly about her condition as part of efforts to reduce stigma and oppose a Labor government proposal to cap payments for veterans’ health-care services. The dispute puts a personal health issue—and the treatment of veterans—at the centre of a broader political clash between One Nation and its critics.
