Florida seeks millions from Discord over alleged child-safety failures

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier sued Discord, accusing the platform of misleading children and parents about safeguards and leaving young users exposed to predators. The case adds Florida to a growing list of states taking legal action against the popular app.

Florida seeks millions from Discord over alleged child-safety failures
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida filed a civil lawsuit against Discord on Thursday, alleging the platform misled children and parents about its safety protections and failed to adequately shield young users from predators and other bad actors. Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office is seeking potentially millions of dollars in damages. The complaint, filed in Glades County circuit court, alleges that Discord relies on minimal safety settings, limited moderation and weak enforcement of its rules. “Child predators and other bad actors have found a haven in Discord,” Uthmeier wrote in the filing, arguing that shortcomings stretch from account creation and platform use to content moderation. Discord has more than 90 million daily active users and is especially popular with young people. Florida’s lawsuit adds to mounting scrutiny of the company by state officials concerned about children’s online safety. The allegations have not been established in court. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued Discord in May after investigating the platform following reports it was used by the man accused of fatally shooting conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford also sued in May, alleging the company failed to protect young users and adequately explain the risks to parents. Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin filed a similar case in June. The Florida case marks another front in Uthmeier’s broader effort to challenge technology companies over their safeguards for children. The lawsuit seeks financial penalties, though the available details do not specify a final damages amount.
