Democratic Senate Committee Borrows $15 Million for Midterm Push
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has borrowed $15 million to help fund its final midterm campaign push, according to a Federal Election Commission filing submitted Thursday, Oct. 22. The committee spent $32 million during the first two weeks of October, directing about half toward coordinated campaign spending in 10 states. Ohio received $4.7 million. Iowa, Michigan, Kansas, Alaska and Maine each received more than $1 million, with additional spending in Texas, Georgia, North Carolina and New Hampshire. The DSCC reported just over $20 million in cash on hand as of Oct. 14. The loan gives the party committee additional funds as it tries to compete across a wider Senate map in the final stretch before Election Day. Republicans have also turned to borrowing: the National Republican Senatorial Committee took out $20 million in loans in September. The DSCC has slightly lagged its GOP counterpart in fundraising for much of the election cycle, though Democratic Senate candidates have generally raised more than their Republican opponents. That candidate fundraising edge can help Democrats compete on television, where candidates and party committees working with them often receive more favorable broadcast advertising rates than outside groups. The Democratic committee said it was responding to Republican megadonor spending. “In the face of being outspent by GOP megadonors, Senate Democrats remain in the best position yet to win the majority,” DSCC spokesperson Maeve Coyle said, adding that the committee would use “every tool at our disposal.” Borrowing near Election Day is not unusual for party committees. The DSCC took out $20 million in loans during the 2024 campaign cycle.
