D.C. Guardsman Wounded After Gunfire Erupts During Attempt to Stop Fight
A National Guard member was shot in the leg late Sunday in Southeast Washington while trying to break up a fight, according to police. The Guardsman’s injuries were not life-threatening, Metropolitan Police Department interim Chief Jeffery Carroll said Monday morning. The Guardsman, whose identity has not been released, and several others were inside a van monitoring the neighborhood when they saw a fight just after 11 p.m. Sunday, Carroll said. The group got out to intervene, and gunfire broke out. “Members of the National Guard immediately gave commands to that individual to put down the gun,” Carroll told reporters. The person then pointed the weapon toward the Guardsmen, who returned fire, Carroll said. Police have not publicly identified the person who pointed the gun or said whether that person was injured or taken into custody. The circumstances surrounding the fight also were not immediately detailed. President Donald Trump sent National Guard members to Washington last year as part of what he described as a public safety emergency. Sunday’s shooting put one of those service members in danger while the Guardsmen were monitoring the area and attempting to intervene in a street dispute.
